Youths from Akwa Ibom protest the imprisonment of a lawyer

On Thursday, a group of young people came to protest the imprisonment of Inibehe Effiong, a human rights attorney who had been sentenced to prison by Akwa Ibom State Chief Judge Ekaette Obot.
After 15 days in custody, Inibehe has reportedly been moved from Ikot Ekpene Correctional Facility to Uyo Correctional Centre.

On July 27, the CJ reportedly sentenced Inibehe to prison for engaging in what she deemed to be “contemptuous and insulting behavior in court.”
Since the imprisonment took place, numerous Civil Society Organizations, lawyers, and other members of the public have condemned it, alleging that Inibehe was not given a fair chance to defend himself.
Agba Jalingo, a rights activist, also disclosed that Effiong’s beard had been shaved by the prison staff.
Inibehe was representing his client, Mr. Leo Ekpenyong, in a libel action that was allegedly brought by the state’s governor, Udom Emmanuel, against the client.
