The Divisional Police Headquarters in Anambra State’s Ihiala Local Government Area was set on fire by some unnamed assailants.
The event, which took place early on Wednesday, has raised tension and created unrest in the Ihiala village.
The attackers attacked the police station in large numbers, opened fire on the premises after shooting erratically and frightening away the on-duty police officers.
As at the time this report was submitted, the reason for the development was unknown, and it was unclear if the criminals fled with police ammunition.
Although the number of fatalities has not yet been determined, it is known that the fire destroyed the structure, the belongings inside, and the government records.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement.
Ikenga said, “Our operatives in the early hours of today 28/12/2022 engaged some gunmen who attacked Ihiala police divisional headquarters and recovers one abandoned Ak47 rifle. The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives, and no casualty was recorded.
“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station building had already ignited a fire and affected the building.
“Operation is still ongoing in the area, further details shall be communicated.”
