Gunmen thought to be armed robbers have reportedly killed five persons including three policemen and kidnapped another in Enugu State.
The two further individuals were said to be civilians.
The incident happened at New Haven section of the Enugu North Local Government Area of the state capital on Wednesday night.
According to information provided to our reporter on Thursday, the attack took place at about 10:30 p.m. in front of St. Francis Supermarket at Block Bus stop.
A gunfight reportedly broke out between the shooters, who were thought to be armed thieves, and the police officers performing a stop-and-search.
“Unfortunately, three policemen were overpowered and shot dead. The hoodlums also took away their guns and abducted one person,” one of the sources said.
Two civilians who were caught in the crossfire of the gunfight, according to a different source, were also among those dead, and one man was apparently kidnapped by the thugs.
Unconfirmed reports, however, claim that the two victims were actually gunmen who died as a result of police shooting, not civilians.
Residents in the area sent out a security notice that read: “It happened at block bus stop in front of frank supermarket.
“Three policemen down already. Guys for our information, incase we still dey outside avoid new Haven.
“Two battered police men are still lying lifeless here.”
A video that showed the deceased policeman in the gutter was attached to the message.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, could not be reached since his phone showed that it was switched off, making attempts to get his comment unsuccessful.
