The retirement of military generals whenever there is a new government, according to renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, is not ideal.
This was said by Sheikh Gumi during a Trust TV interview on Sunday.
Remember how Gumi served as a go-between during the height of banditry in the North West under President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and helped draw numerous Fulani armed militia out of hiding before the project was shelved?
If the President Bola Tinubu administration makes a commitment, the scholar said he is ready to go back and finish what he started.
Meanwhile, Gumi, a medical doctor who retired as captain in the Nigerian Army, said the President Bola Tinubu has taken the right course in the fight against insecurity in the country.
He stated, “They are starting from the scratch, so I think they have the opportunity to learn and take the right course. I think that having Nuhu Ribadu as the National Security Adviser is a positive step for us in this area.
The security leaders should work with him and coordinate with him, though, I hope he won’t just be a figurehead.
Gumi, however, claimed that a lack of coordination was often what the past administrations lacked.
Different services compete with one another and are even envious of one another, which prevents them from working together and coordinating their efforts. If there is collaboration, I believe we can achieve peace,” he remarked.
When asked, if he would accept in the event that President Tinubu calls him to continue from where stopped, Gumi simply said, “Yes.”
He said, “You see, it is not only establishing contact, it is about confidence. We have built a bridge of confidence, not just contact. I think this is the time to come down and put everything on the table. But let the approach be holistic. That is my advice to the security chiefs.
It’s not just me. They have gone and met them, according to professionals I know in this field. Together, we are all conversing and creating a plan. It must be all-encompassing.We worry that certain individuals would attempt to sabotage this effort in order to profit financially. It must be comprehensive since all parties engaged who are qualified should be included.
“We need to bring in emirs, religious academics, and the military to figure out how to get out of this situation. The thieves ought to enter as well.
