Nigerian student from Enugu becomes the first from Africa to win the AFS Award for Young Global Citizens

Noel Ifeanyi Alumona, a student from Nigeria and Enugu who was born and raised in the United States, has won the 2022 AFS Award for Young Global Citizens.

As a result, since the award’s creation in 1914, he is the first African to receive it.

At the United Nations headquarters in New York, the AFS Intercultural Programs, The Youth Assembly, and the Global Communications Department of the UN presented the award as part of International Youth Day.

The $10,000 cash award was given to Noel, a student at Vanderbilt University in the United States, in appreciation of his tenacious fight to prevent violence against women and girls by teaching guys how to behave responsibly.

The AFS Award for Young Global Citizens honors young people from all over the world for their dedication to strengthening the international community and fostering a more just, tranquil, and tolerant environment.
