Nigerian George Imafidon wins RAE Award for Young Engineer of the Year

George Imafidon, a Nigerian living in the UK, has won the Royal Academy of Engineers (RAE) Award for Young Engineer of the Year.

A total of 3,000 pounds were given out to the five victors, with Imafidon coming out on top overall.

Dr. Fragkoulis Kanavaris, Arup’s top material expert with a background in structural engineering, Dr. Matthew Marson, Global Market sector director at Arcadis, and Dr. Beatriz Mingo, a materials engineer and Presidential fellow at the University of Manchester, were the other four winners. Dr. Robert Hammond is a lecturer in infection and global health at the University of St. Andrews.
While celebrating on twitter, Imafidon wrote, “I WON THE YOUNG ENGINEER OF THE YEAR AWARD!!!??, To that little boy in Peckham and all the kids having to overcome countless barriers, please believe in yourself. Know you are worthy and capable of achieving your dreams.”
Imafidon is a Performance Engineer who works on the design and operation of an Extreme-E race car for Sir Lewis Hamilton HonFREng’s team x44 electric racing squad.

The racing team, which was established in September 2020, reportedly aims to raise awareness of environmental issues by competing in the most distant, climate-change-affected regions on earth.

Imafidon spent years repairing his friends’ bikes in Peckham, Southeast London, a hobby that finally helped him earn a First-Class Master’s degree in Mechanical engineering from University College London.
