NDLEA arrests drug-dealing Lagos airport cleaner, others

On Sunday, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency announced the arrest of Sunday Ohiagu, a cleaner who was allegedly leading a drug ring out of the international terminal of Lagos State’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Ohiagu was detained on Tuesday when a passenger headed for Dubai, Obinna Osita, was detained, according to a statement from the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi.

He claimed that Osita, a planned passenger on an Air Peace trip, was detained with three suitcases, two of which had eight blocks of cannabis sativa, totaling 4.25kg, that were stowed away in crayfish, garri, and cassava products.

According to Babafemi, Osita was detained along with another associate of the Ohiagu-affiliated airport syndicate.

According to the statement, “Investigations revealed that a Dubai-based drug dealer contracted Ohiagu, 34, an airport cleaner from Orlu West Local Government Area of Imo State, to create access for the trafficker’s unhindered passage of the drugs.” Osita, 42, a native of Oyi Local Government Area in Anambra State, was hired to traffic the drugs.

“The drug syndicate bust, which is the first drug arrest at the MMIA’s new terminal, follows the Monday, August 15 confiscation of a shipment of Viju and Fearless energy drink bottles that were being used to disguise skunk for sale to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, through the NAHCO export shed.
