Long-term okada ban starts today, Lagos government informs citizens

Riders and passengers of commercial motorbikes who are detained in locations where the use of such vehicles is prohibited in the state might face up to three years in prison, according to the Lagos State Government.
Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, the state’s commissioner for transportation, made this announcement during a press conference on Wednesday in Ikeja to reiterate the government’s expanded prohibition on commercial motorbikes.
Kosofe LG, Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA; Oshodi-Isolo LG, Isolo LCDA, Ejigbo LCDA; Shomolu LG, Bariga LCDA; and Mushin LG, Odi-Olowo LCDA were among the companies covered by the prolonged ban, according to GOGAN Media.
Oladeinde said, “The decision and position of the government on Okada is very clear, and we are not compromising on this decision which is to further consolidate on the achievements made so far with particular reference to decrease in accident and crime rates as well as the return of sanity to our communities within the state.
“We implore the general public to comply as both the rider and passenger are liable to three years in prison if prosecuted, while their motorcycles will be impounded and crushed in the public view, in line with the provision of Section 46, sub-section 1, 2 and 3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.”
Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport, issued an appeal to all commercial motorcycle riders and passengers urging them to abide by the prohibition and avoid all local governments that are impacted.
