LASEPA: 30,000 people died from air pollution in Lagos

Over 30,000 premature deaths in Lagos were attributed to air pollution in 2021, according to the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency.

This information was revealed in a document that the agency on Sunday made available to The PUNCH.

In the document, LASEPA noted that a project with the name “Eko Clean Air” had been organized by the organization to combat air pollution and that the transportation sector was responsible for the greatest amount of air pollution.

“ECA is an advocacy and behavioral modeling driven project that uses a bottom-up, inclusive, and pan-stakeholder paradigm to raise the level of awareness, pro-action, and collaboration for monitoring and reducing air pollution in Lagos,” it stated.

In Lagos in 2021, air pollution will be to blame for approximately 30, 000 premature deaths. 

For this reason, we are launching a number of projects under this framework in an effort to meet our goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to comply with Governor Babajide Sanwo-environmental Olu’s preservation directive.

The World Bank identified the transportation sector as having the highest contribution to air pollution in 2018. In response, the agency is working on hybrid pilot buses in LASEPA, hybrid Bus Rapid Transit buses, and will work with the Ministry of Transportation, Lagos Computerized Vehicle Inspection Service, and the Federal Road Safety Corps on the plan to reduce vehicle emissions.
