Lagos urges communities in flood-prone areas to relocate in order to avoid calamity

Owners of all buildings on drainage alignments and setbacks have been notified by the Lagos State Government to relocate to higher ground.

Tunji Bello, the state’s commissioner for the environment and water resources, issued this warning in a statement on Tuesday. He said that several of these structures have previously been flagged for demolition because they violate drainage alignments in Mende, Maryland, and Aboru in Alimosho.

The area is a low-lying flood plain and a drainage path for all the water coming from Agidingbi, Oregun, Opebi, Allen, GRA, Maryland up to Ogudu Foreshore, he explained. As a result, the buildings in Mende were marked.
