Kano: Wind and flood demolish 6,417 homes, worth N541.6 million

In 10 Local Government Areas of the state since April, floods and windstorms have destroyed 6,417 homes and properties worth N541.6 million, according to the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA.
On Tuesday in Kano, Dr. Sale Jili, the agency’s executive secretary, verified these to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He claims that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, had previously predicted flooding brought on by the state’s excessive rains.
“Nine persons were killed, 6,417 houses destroyed, nine persons injured and properties worth N541.6 million were destroyed due to flood and windstorm in the state.”
Mr. Jili provided a list of the impacted local government areas, including Doguwa, Kibiya, Kiru, Rano, Danbatta, Tsanyawa, Gwale, Ajingi, Dawakin Kudu, and Albasu, as well as specific victims.
“We have visited Rano, Danbatta, Ajingi and Gwale to distribute relief materials to the victims as measures to alleviate their sufferings.”
Food supplies, bags of cement, roofing sheets, mats, mats, blankets, pillows, and cooking oil were among the items supplied.
He added that in order to gather thorough data, help the victims, and conduct assessments in all 10 affected LGAs, the agency has sent personnel there.
The Executive Secretary urged the public to notify their Ward Head of any disaster and issued a warning to people not to throw trash in waterways or block their drains to prevent floods.
“Residents around flood prone areas should vacate and safeguard their lives and property,” Mr Jili said.
