INEC laments stakeholders’ poor understanding of Electoral Act

The Independent National Electoral Commission has expressed regret over how little the Electoral Act is understood by influential political figures and groups in the nation ahead of the general election in 2023.

Festus Okoye, director of voter education and publicity, made this statement over the weekend at a discussion with INEC on locating and reducing hot spots for electoral disinformation and misinformation.

Organised by the International Press Centre with support from the European Union, the event brought together eminent personalities including the Chairman, Senior Fellow, Centre for Democracy and Development, Professor Jibrin Ibrahim.

Speaking on a keynote address, “Issues, Perspectives and Flashpoints of Electoral Misinformation and Disinformation,” Okoye said stakeholders were yet to transition from the Electoral Act 2010 to the new Electoral Act, 2022.

He also pointed out that some of the issues the public ought to be informed of and led appropriately were not well understood by those who ought to grasp the commission’s processes and procedures.
