Giggs, an ex-Man Utd star, will be retried by the judge

Following a jury’s deadlock last month, a UK judge ordered on Wednesday that former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs will be retried on domestic abuse charges.
Jurors at Manchester Crown Court reached a deadlock after the initial four-week hearing, and Judge Hilary Manley set a fresh trial date of July 31, 2023.
Former Wales international Giggs, 48, denied abusing Kate Greville and her younger sister as well as using coercive and controlling behavior toward her.
On Wednesday, prosecutor Peter Wright stated in court, “We do seek a re-trial in regard of Mr. Giggs.
“The matter has been considered at a senior level within the Crown Prosecution Service and also the willingness of the complainant to give evidence.
“They indicate a preparedness so to do.”
Giggs will continue to be out on bail until the trial in 2019.
After almost 23 hours of deliberation, Manley ruled that there was no “realistic prospect” of a judgment and discharged the first jury, which was made up of seven women and four men and had the option of returning a majority verdict.
The three offenses carry a potential five-year prison sentence, should they be ultimately proven guilty.
Greville allegedly tried to break up with the ex-star, who, according to the prosecution, headbutted her in the face and subjected her to a “litany of abuse, both physical and psychological.”
Among those who testified in the case was former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. Giggs also took the witness stand and admitted to being unfaithful in all of his previous sexual relationships but insisted he had never been violent.
After being placed on leave following his arrest, he resigned as Wales manager in June.
Midway through the 1990s, Giggs burst onto the scene as a youngster. He finished his playing days at Old Trafford as the most lauded player in the annals of English football.
He played for Manchester United for 23 years, making a club record 963 appearances, earning 13 Premier League championships and two Champions League trophies.
After David Moyes was fired at the end of the 2013–14 season, he temporarily assumed leadership at Old Trafford to start his coaching career. After that, Giggs spent two years helping Louis van Gaal.
