The Supreme Court’s ruling confirming Dr. Ifeanyi Odii’s victory as the legally elected candidate of the party has been applauded by supporters of the Ebonyi Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate for the 2023 election.
The Ebonyi PDP governorship primary election, which was won by Odii on May 28 and 29, was upheld by the Apex court on Wednesday in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
The court upheld Odii’s victory and dismissed the appeal Senator Obinna Ogba of the Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone had filed to contest it.
Supporters of Odii who spoke with NAN on Wednesday in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi, termed the ruling as a positive move for the state.
Supporter Mr. Amuche Okoh claimed that the verdict was favorable to the good citizens of Ebonyi and the growth of democracy in the nation.
According to Okoh, Odii, also known as “AnyiChuks,” was a man of the people and a wonderful man who could lead Ebonyi to greatness.
“Anyichuks has laid solid foundations in various human endeavours, especially in the areas of economic development and human empowerment among others.
The PDP’s state publicity secretary, Chika Nwoba, stated that the victory was not just for the PDP specifically but also for the state’s residents as a whole.
According to NAN, Odii urged all party supporters in the state to band together in order to win the state after the verdict.
Speaking to reporters, Odii said that the judgment was a positive development for the party’s chapter in the state.
In order to create a new course of action, he promised to speak with every PDP leader, including any disgruntled party members.
“Today is a great day for us as PDP family. The victory goes to PDP as one family.
“I will be reaching out to every party leader, my fellow party faithful on how we will win the 2023 election,” he said.
Odii stated that it was time for party members to start over with their ideas for how to carry the party forward after noting that the issue of the factional crisis had now been resolved.
He therefore urged all enraged members to lay down their weapons in order for the party to successfully oust the ruling party from office.
He referred to the legal system as the average man’s last hope.
“I have always hoped that it is the only place to reclaim my mandate,” he said.
Speaking on the 2023 poll, he said: “Ebonyi is a PDP state. The battle may look so fierce but PDP is the winning party.”
According to GOGAN Media, Justice Lawal Garba ruled that Ogba, who currently represents the Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone, lacked the legal authority to submit an appeal in the lower court. This ruling was part of a five-member panel.
Ogba was not a party to the full trial court proceedings, he claimed, thus the Abuja Court of Appeal lacked the authority to have heard the suit in the first instance (a Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki).
The judge referred to the appellant court’s whole proceedings as a futile exercise in futility because it was determined that the court lacked authority to undertake them.
According to GOGAN Media, Mr. Odii and Senator Ogba were involved in a legal dispute regarding who had been legitimately chosen as the party’s candidate for the 2023 election during primary elections that were held several times throughout the state.
