Breaking: PSC Chairman Resigns Amid Police Recruitment Row

Musiliu Smith, a former inspector general of police, has resigned as the head of the police service commission (PSC).
His departure might have been related to the recent argument between the police department and the commission on the hiring process.
The chairman reportedly submitted his resignation to President Muhammadu Buhari last week, but it was accepted on Tuesday.
Later, Mr. Smith presented his resignation to the Board’s members on Wednesday.
The South South Commissioner and board spokesman, Austin Braimoh, confirmed the chairman’s resignation and stated that Mr. Smith had submitted his resignation to the President due to health reasons.
Although board members have tentatively nominated retired Justice Lara Ogunbiyi as acting chairperson of the commission, he continued that only President Buhari had the authority to appoint another chairman.
The commission and the Office of the Inspector-General of Police had been at odds about whose organization should be in charge of hiring new members for the Force.
Recently, the PSC posted job openings for constables and asked interested parties to apply online.
However, the police asked the general public to disregard the warning in a statement, stating that the Force alone was in charge of the hiring procedure.
In May 2018, President Buhari named Smith, a former IGP, as the head of the Police Service Commission.
