Black History Month: Nigerian authors atop best-read-list by Amazon

Amazon UK has published a list of books it dubbed “excellent reads by black authors” in honor of Black History Month in 2022.

Twelve works were chosen, and five of them were authored by Nigerians or authors with Nigerian ancestry.

According to Amazon, the list was created by Amazon Books Editors and BEN, Amazon’s Black Employee Network, in order to provide reading lists for Black History Month in October.

BEN is an internal organization of Amazon workers that promotes diversity and makes sure that the corporation is aware of the viewpoints of persons of Black African and Caribbean origin.

The five books by Nigerian authors are; Settlers: Journeys Through the Food, Faith and Culture of Black African London by Jimi Famurewa, a British-Nigerian jounalist; Manorism (a debut collection of poems) by Yomi Sode; Someday, Maybe by Onyi Nwabineli, also a debut of literary fiction by the Nigerian-British author.

Others include; Bodé Aboderin’s parenting book for fathers and fathers-to-be, Fatherhood by Papa B and finally Wahala by Nikki May. Wahala before it was published had been announced that it was being adapted for a major BBC drama, it also made various ‘2022 Books to Watch’ lists, and was announced as a Best Fiction Book of the Year So Far by The Times.

Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 1987, with the purpose of recognising the contributions black people have made to the UK over many generations.
